Understanding Music Copyright in Uganda

Music copyright is the legal right that protects musicians, songwriters, and producers from having their work used without permission. When an artist creates a song, they automatically own the rights to it, meaning others cannot copy, sell, or use it commercially without their consent.

What Does Copyright Protect?

Copyright covers:
- Lyrics (the words of the song)
- Melody (the tune and instrumental composition)
-Recordings (the produced version of the song)

Why is Copyright Important?

It ensures that artists get paid when their music is played, streamed, or sold.

It prevents piracy (unauthorized copying and selling of music).

It gives artists full control over how their music is used.

The State of Music Copyright in Uganda

In Uganda, copyright protection exists, but many artists still face challenges like music piracy, lack of awareness, and weak enforcement of copyright laws. Many musicians do not receive fair compensation because their music is used without proper licensing.

The Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act, 2006, is the main law governing copyright in Uganda. However, enforcement remains a challenge due to widespread unauthorized use of music, especially online and in public spaces.

Who Protects Copyright in Uganda?

Several legitimate stakeholders help artists protect their rights:

Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) – Registers and enforces copyrights.

Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) – Collects royalties for musicians when their music is played in public.

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) – Regulates the media and ensures compliance with copyright laws.
